How the Council is organised

The Council’s Chief Executive is Paul Lawrence. We also have four Executive Directors:

  • Deborah Smart (Corporate Services)
  • Amanda Hatton (Children, Education and Justice Services)
  • Christine Laverty (Chief Officer of the Сòòò½APPntegration Joint Board and Edinburgh Health and Social Care Partnership)
  • Gareth Barwell (Place)

The Council is made up of four directorates, each split into various service areas:

  • Chief Executive Office: includes our Governance and Democratic Services, strategy and communications and our Edinburgh and South East Scotland City Region Deal Project Management Office and where we form partnerships with our Elected Members.
  • Corporate Services: This area includes services like Human Resources, Finance, Procurement and customer and digital services. This is also where workforce change is planned and delivered.
  • Children, Education and Justice Services: Oversees all of our schools, education and lifelong learning. We are also responsible for libraries and community services. This area also oversees Children’s social services and the work that goes on to support vulnerable groups like refugees, victims of domestic abuse and ex-offenders.
  • Edinburgh Health and Social Care Partnership: This directorate is a partnership between the City of Edinburgh Council and NHS Lothian, managed by the . We work together to provide health and social care services like adults social services, older persons care and primary care services.
  • Place:
  • This area is responsible for the planning, development and management of the city. Services include waste and cleansing, parks and green spaces, housing and homelessness and transport. Place also look after our cultural venues and events.
