Archaeology Works, Constitution Street
Archaeology works to start at South Leith Parish Church Wall.
In the next few weeks our team of archaeologists will start work on Constitution Street outside South Leith Parish Church.
Previous works has shown that in the medieval period the graveyard extended across the road and that graves survived beneath the current road surface. The archaeologists will be on hand to excavate and remove any human remains that are likely to be affected by the tram works. After the excavation the remains will be subject to examination and analysis that will reveal information on the health, diseases and diet of the people of medieval Leith.
All archaeological work will be carried out according to a specification provided by the City of Edinburgh Council, whose archaeologist will also monitor the work.
A Sheriff’s warrant had been issued for the recovery of these human remains.
