Additional Traffic Management Arrangements as of 4 July
Please find below a summary of additional traffic management arrangements to accommodate site investigations works and utility diversions outside the main area of works.
LOCALISED WORK SITES
Main construction works for the project are scheduled to be completed during 2022. There will be a requirement to undertake localised works at times on carriageways and footways to install equipment to support the new tram line, as well as new street furniture. Localised traffic management and pedestrian diversions will be in place as required with any changes being communicated in advance.

YORK PLACE TO LONDON ROAD
London Road
As of late May traffic travelling citybound from London Road has been reduced to one lane with the loading bays and taxi rank that are currently in place from 9 Baxter’s Place to Greenside Lane being closed off and parking restrictions enforced to ensure traffic flows are maintained. In addition, the temporary bus stop that has been located in the central reservation on Leith Walk will move to its permanent location adjacent to Elm Row.
A give way has been installed at the junction of London Road with Leith Walk for traffic travelling citybound from London Road. The no right hand turn from London Road to Leith Walk will remain in place as will the left hand turn from Leith Walk on to London Road.
Please note that further changes to the traffic management plans are scheduled to start in July 2022.
LEITH WALK
Leith Walk - Cycleway Closure
Localised works will be ongoing on the northbound cycle lane on the west side of Leith Walk. As a result, the cycle lane remains closed. Localised diversion routes remain in place until completion.
Works to establish the new kerb lines, improvements to public realm area, with a segregated cycle lane, and associated tram infrastructure works are progressing on the east side of Leith Walk. In sections, where the newly constructed southbound cycle way has been complete, this remains closed whilst ongoing works are undertaken. We would encourage cyclists to continue using the diversion routes in place.
Elm Row & Montgomery Street
Works commenced in January 2022. A temporary bus stop has been established, located just off Elm Row. Visit for further information.
Site lines were extended at Montgomery Street to accommodate the installation of drainage pipes with wider public realm works ongoing. and see the
Gayfield Square
The one-way system at Gayfield Square will remain in place until works at York Place to London road have progressed enough to allow the completion of the section from London Road to Annandale Street.
Leith Walk (London Road to Manderston Street)
UPDATE: From 4 July to 18 July 2022, further traffic management measures will be implemented on Leith Walk, including temporary junction closures and overnight traffic lane closures.
Junction closures:
- From Monday 4 July 2022, Brunswick Road will close for 5 days. UPDATE: works completed ahead of schedule and junction re-opened 07/07
- From Monday 11 July 2022, Albert Street will close for 5 days.
During the daytime and outside the overnight closures the below arrangements will apply:
- Foot of The Walk - There is no left hand turn from Duke Street onto Leith Walk. Access to Leith Walks is maintained via Great Junction Street / Easter Road on to Manderston Street.
- Manderston Street – Access remains in place.
- Pilrig Street – access to and from Pilrig Street will remain in place for traffic heading south
- Albert Street – access to and from Albert Street will be in place for traffic heading south EXCEPT closure on Mon 11 July for 5 days
- Brunswick Road – access will be maintained from Brunswick Road to Leith Walk/McDonald Road
- McDonald Road – access to and from McDonald Road will remain in place for traffic heading south
- Annandale Junction - Northbound access to Annandale Street will be maintained
The below streets are closed at their junctions with Leith Walk:
- Dalmeny Street – Closed as of 27 June for 6-8 weeks. Read more information in our news article.
- Iona Street
- Lorne Street
- Montgomery Street
Overnight closures
These will take place Monday-Friday between 19:30-5:00 on the below dates. Outside these times, the citybound traffic lane will re-open and be accessible. Advanced warning signs will be in place, with traffic management teams ensuring localised access is maintained.
*From Monday 4 July 2022:
Foot of The Walk to McDonald Road for 5 nights: the citybound traffic lane will be closed. Localised access will be in place between Foot of The Walk and Jameson Place, as well as access being maintained to the Shrubhill development.
Broughton Street to London Road for 2 nights: the northbound traffic lane lane is scheduled to close to carry out system infrastructure works. Local access will be maintained with vehicles diverted via Bonnington Road and Easter Road.
*From Monday 11 July 2022:
Foot of the Walk to Pilrig Street for 5 nights: the city bound traffic lane will be closed. Localised access will be in place between Foot of The Walk and Jameson Place.
Broughton Street to London Road for 2 nights: the northbound traffic lane is scheduled to close to carry out further system infrastructure works. Local access will be maintained with vehicles diverted via Bonnington Road and Easter Road.
*From Monday 18 July 2022:
Foot of the Walk to Pilrig Street for 2 nights: the city bound traffic lane will be closed. Localised access will be in place between Foot of The Walk and Jameson Place. This is to carry out surfacing works on the carriageway.
Lorne Street
Excavations are ongoing at Lorne Street to just west of Lorne Place. South side access for cars and pedestrians is maintained
Jane Street to Balfour Street
As part of ongoing localised works on the west side of Leith Walk, vehicle access to Jane Street remains closed and parking restrictions are in force in the area.
Manderston Street to Foot of the Walk
Traffic management arrangements at the Foot of the Walk changed over the weekend of 9/10 April 2022. From Manderston Street down to Kirk Street, the running lane has moved to the west side of the street to allow further works on the east side of Leith Walk.
As a result of these changes:
- The Manderston Street / Leith Walk junction has reopened to traffic travelling from Easter Road to Leith Walk. Vehicles will only be allowed to turn left onto Leith Walk heading towards the city centre. This will become the main diversion route for buses and other vehicles that normally turn left from Duke Street onto Leith Walk.
- There will be no left hand turn from Duke Street onto Leith Walk.
- There will be no access to Manderston Street from Leith Walk.
- Traffic will continue to be able to turn right from Great Junction Street onto Leith Walk.
- Traffic movements between Great Junction Street and Duke Street heading both ways will remain under two-way traffic management.

FOOT OF THE WALK TO OCEAN DRIVE
Laurie Street to Coatfield Lane
Access to and from Coatfield Lane for local access only is via Laurie Street and Constitution Street on a 2 way temporary traffic light control for north and south bound traffic.
Coatfield Lane to Queen Charlotte Street
The junction with Queen Charlotte Street and Constitution Street is closed to east and west bound traffic.
In order to maintain traffic flows, Maritime Street will open at the junction of Bernard Street (by Café Marmalade) one way heading south. Parking restrictions will be in place on Maritime Street to facilitate the diversion.
Diversion routes will be clearly signed for all traffic including cyclists, however cyclists can use the option of walking bicycles through the pedestrian routes.

Bernard/Baltic Junction
In mid July this junction will reduce to one lane contraflow to enable final surfacing works to commence.
Constitution Street - Constitution Place to Tower Street
This section has opened to traffic travelling in both directions from Baltic Street through to Ocean Drive at Rennie’s Isle/Victoria Bridge. There will be no parking, loading or stopping.
Access to Tower Street from Constitution Street remains closed with local access being maintained for residential private parking. Main access to Tower Street remains via the Shore. Parking restrictions also remain in place on Tower Street. Parking on the Shore has been reinstated up to the corner of the Shore/Tower Street.
OCEAN DRIVE TO NEWHAVEN
Stevedore Place
Traffic management at Stevedore Place was adjusted on 25/26 June to accommodate tram stop and hard landscaping works. Find out more on our website.
Further changes to the traffic management at the Tower Place junction are expected from week commencing 11 July 2022 with more details becoming available in due course.
This route is not suitable for Heavy Goods Vehicles with no vehicle access to Ocean Terminal.
Rennie’s Isle to Tower Place
Works are ongoing between Rennie’s Isle and Tower Place and the road remains closed. These works are scheduled to be completed by Autumn 2022. Vehicle access to Tower Place, Forth Ports, Stevedore Place, Constitution Place and Tower Street Industrial Estate will be via Commercial Street / Bernard Street, and onto Constitution Street. Vehicle access to the Cala Development and the entrance to Rennie’s Isle from the west is provided via Ocean Terminal on Ocean Drive.
Localised access to the Queens Quay Developments remains in place. A pedestrian diversion will be in place via Tower Place and the Victoria Swing Bridge for pedestrians travelling east and west. Additionally, as part of this site establishment Tower Bridge will be closed to pedestrians to allow structural works to be undertaken.
Rennie’s Isle to Ocean Terminal
Victoria Bridge remains open to pedestrians. Vehicle access to the Cala Development and the entrance to Rennie’s Isle from the west is provided via Ocean Terminal on Ocean Drive.

Melrose Drive
Construction works are ongoing on the south roundabout on Ocean Drive to Melrose Drive. Pedestrian access is maintained, although may change at times throughout the phasing of works. Bus stops currently situated on Melrose Drive will be relocated to the west of Ocean Terminal.
Lindsay Road
Lindsay Road is back to two-way traffic. The eastbound running lane from Sandpiper Road on to Melrose Drive heading east to the junction at North Leith Sands is closed to traffic.
Pedestrian routes are expected to change with further information available in due course.
FOOTWAY WORKS
Elm Row
The crossing point at Elm Row has been moved approximately 100 meters northbound. Download the traffic management plan from our website.
Albert Street
Gas main repair works will take place on the footpath from w/c 4 July and are expected to take less than a week. These will involve a barriered excavation but pedestrian access will be maintained.
Pilrig Street
Slight adjustments were made to take crossing point from 27 June to accommodate further works in the area.
Leith Walk – east side at 165a Leith Walk
From Wednesday 13 April 2022 site lines will be extended towards properties to accommodate Scottish Power connections to the newly built substation. Pedestrian access will be maintained.
Leith Walk – east side near 105 Leith Walk
There will be adjustments to our site lines from Tuesday 28 June to accommodate SPEN works. This is expected to be in place for approximately 2 weeks. Find out more on our website.
Constitution Street - near Coatfield Lane
Localised sites have been established on the existing footway between the entrance to South Leith Parish Church and Coatfield Lane the which will result in pedestrians being diverted on to the east side of Constitution Street. These arrangements were put in place on 2 June and are expected to be in place for approximately 8 weeks.
Coatfield Lane to Queen Charlotte Street
From Thursday 28 April 2022 pedestrian access changed on the west side of Constitution Street from Coatfield Lane travelling north to accommodate main infrastructure works. Access to properties will be maintained. These works are expected to take approximately six weeks to complete, however, due to SPEN connection works there has been a delay to these works being completed.

Queen Charlotte Street to Baltic Street
The fence lines between Maritime / Mitchell Street and south of the Bernard / Baltic junction on Constitution Street were removed. Localised works for the installation of tram infrastructure are continuing.
Bernard Street at Royal Bank of Scotland
Localised footway works are taking place adjacent to the Royal Bank of Scotland to accommodate power connections for the new traffic signals.
Tower Street – Genting Casino
We are currently reviewing the fence lines on the corner of the Tower Street junction and reduced fencing where possible.
Lindsay Road / Melrose Drive Residential Development between works sites
Localised works are continuing on the north footway at Newhaven. There will be changes to the pedestrian routes however pedestrian access will always be maintained.
