Notification of changes to the traffic management arrangements between Pilrig Street and Annandale Street / Montgomery Street

Find out more about the traffic management changes in this section of Leith Walk.

Main construction works are nearing completion on the east side of Leith Walk between Montgomery Street and Pilrig Street.  To accommodate system infrastructure works there will be further changes to the traffic management and working site areas. 

This will result in vehicles being diverted on to the new carriageway on the east side of Leith Walk and heras fencing being removed from the footways. 

Site will be re-established on the west side of Leith Walk which will see heras fencing being located on the carriageway to enable the commencement of system infrastructure works. These changes are scheduled to be implemented from Monday 20 June 2022 and are expected to be in place for approximately four weeks.

Leith Walk will remain closed to all northbound traffic between Annandale Street and Foot of The Walk. Further details on arrangements are provided below:

  • Pilrig Street – access to and from Pilrig Street will remain in place for traffic heading south
  • Albert Street – access to and from Albert Street will be in place for traffic heading south
  • Brunswick Road – access will be maintained from Brunswick Road to Leith Walk/McDonald Road
  • McDonald Road – access to and from McDonald Road will remain in place for traffic heading south
  • Montgomery Street – Current arrangements remain in place
  • Annandale Junction - Northbound access to Annandale Street will be maintained.

In order to continue project works on the east side of Leith Walk between Foot of the Walk and Pilrig Street, the following arrangements remain in place at their junctions with Leith Walk:

  • Dalmeny Street – Access to Dalmeny Street from Leith Walk remains in place.
  • Iona Street – Full closure remains in place.
  • Lorne Street - Full closure remains in place.
  • Manderston Street – Access remains in place.
  • Foot of The Walk - There is no left hand turn from Duke Street onto Leith Walk. Access to Leith Walks is maintained via Great Junction Street / Easter Road on to Manderston Street.

 

Traffic management arrangements have been approved jointly with members of the city's Traffic Management Review Panel, including Lothian Buses and the emergency services. Diversion routes and advanced warning signage will be erected in the area.

Lothian Buses

The project has consulted with Lothian Buses on these traffic management arrangements. Bus stops will be maintained at Elm Row, Shrubhill, Jamieson Place and Foot of the Walk. Details can be found at

Supporting Local Businesses

A Support for Business package is in place, devised in consultation with businesses in the area, which includes a local voucher scheme, an ‘open for business’ campaign across a range of media, and a business continuity fund. Full details can be found on the project website.

Logistics hubs remain operational on Montgomery Street, Albert Street, Dalmeny Street and near Foot of the Walk to help with deliveries and dispatches.. These can also be used by residents expecting large deliveries such as appliances or furniture.

Parking and access

During these works, temporary waiting areas will be available on the running lane on the east side of Leith Walk. Pedestrian footways and access to shops, hospitality and leisure units on the west side will be maintained.
