Additional Traffic Management Arrangements as of 5 May

Weekly Traffic Management

Please find below a summary of additional traffic management arrangements to accommodate site investigations works and utility diversions outside the main area of works.

LOCALISED WORK SITES 

Main construction works for the project are scheduled to be completed during 2022. There will be a requirement to undertake localised works at times on carriageways and footways to install equipment to support the new tram line, as well as new street furniture. Localised traffic management and pedestrian diversions will be in place as required with any changes being  communicated in advance.

YORK PLACE TO LONDON ROAD

Update Picardy Place / Broughton Street junction: 

On Sunday 24 April 2022 the construction site was amended to allow traffic to travel from Picardy Place heading north down Broughton Street.  The pedestrian crossing from The Conan Doyle Pub to the top of Broughton Street (corner with St Paul’s and St George’s Church) will also be reinstated as part of these changes. 

Please note that as of Saturday 30 April there will be no right hand turn from London Road onto Leith Walk northbound. This is expected to be in place for the remainder of works at London Road.

London Road

From week commencing 18 April 2022 there will be adjustments to the traffic management arrangements at London Road to progress tram infrastructure works. Read more and view the traffic management plans.

LEITH WALK

Leith Walk - Cycleway Closure 

Localised works will be ongoing on the cycle lane on the west side of Leith Walk. As a result, the cycle lane remains closed. Localised diversion routes remain in place until completion. 


Elm Row & Montgomery Street

Works commenced in January 2022. A temporary bus stop has been established, located just off Elm Row. Visit  for further information.

Site lines were extended at Montgomery Street to accommodate the installation of drainage pipes with wider public realm works ongoing. and see the 

 


Gayfield Square

The one-way system at Gayfield Square will remain in place until works at York Place to London road have progressed enough to allow the completion of the section from London Road to Annandale Street.


Leith Walk (London Road to Manderston Street)

From 2 February traffic management was moved to the new road surface on the west side from Jane Street to London Road. The main diversion routes for phase 2 of Leith Walk works are via Easter Road / Bonnington Road.

The following streets are open at their junction with Leith Walk:

  • Albert Street: Scottish Water works are continuing. The traffic management arrangements have been changed which currently allows traffic to travel in both directions. As part of works the project will require to make further changes to the movement of traffic on Albert Street.  Further information will become available in due course.
  • Balfour Street: Balfour Street junction is now open to traffic, allowing a right turn from Leith Walk into Balfour Street and a right turn from Balfour Street onto Leith Walk. Works to re-close the entrance to Cambridge Avenue from Pilrig Street are still to be undertaken and further details will be available in due course.
  • Arthur Street
  • Pilrig Street
  • Springfield Street

A left turn off Leith Walk is still available on Dalmeny Street for localised access. Please note this is not suitable for HGVs.

The following Streets are closed at their junction with Leith Walk with diversions in place:

  • Iona Street
  • Lorne Street
  • Jane Street: There will be a requirement to undertake further reinstatement works on Jane Street which will be communicated in the coming weeks. 

Waiting areas: waiting areas for customers of businesses on Leith Walk have been created at Iona Street and Pilrig Street. Further waiting spaces are available on the west side of Leith Walk north of Annandale Street, Pilrig Street and south of Springfield Street.

Lorne Street

The site fence line on Leith Walk at Lorne Street were extended on w/c 4 April to accommodate works in the area. Parking restrictions and a pedestrian diversion are in place. Expected duration is four weeks.


Manderston Street to Foot of the Walk

Traffic management arrangements at the Foot of the Walk changed over the weekend of 9/10 April 2022.
From Manderston Street down to Kirk Street, the running lane has moved to the west side of the street to allow further works on the east side of Leith Walk to commence.

As a result of these changes:

  • The junctions of Manderston Street and Leith Walk and Crown Place and Leith Walk will be closed with enforcement of parking restrictions in place.
  • There will be no left hand turn from Kirk Street heading north. Vehicles will only be able to turn right heading south on Leith Walk. 
  • The bus stop at the foot of the walk will move into the centre of the street. Details of any bus diversions can be found at .
  • Traffic movements between Great Junction Street and Duke Street heading both ways will remain under two-way traffic management.

FOOT OF THE WALK TO OCEAN DRIVE 

Laurie Street to Coatfield Lane

Traffic management arrangements on Constitution Street between Laurie Street and Coatfield Lane were adjusted from Monday 18 April 22.  Traffic moved from west to east with pedestrian access maintained.

Access to and from Coatfield Lane for local access only is via Laurie Street and Constitution Street on a 2 way temporary traffic light control for north and south bound traffic.

Coatfield Lane to Queen Charlotte Street

UPDATE: The junction with Queen Charlotte Street and Constitution Street is closed to east and west bound traffic.

In order to maintain traffic flows, Maritime Street will open at the junction of Bernard Street (by Café Marmalade) one way heading south.  Parking restrictions will be in place on Maritime Street to facilitate the diversion.
Diversion routes will be clearly signed for all traffic including cyclists, however cyclists can use the option of walking bicycles through the pedestrian routes.

Bernard Street update: Attenuation pipe works are now finished, site set up will change over the coming weeks and a work programme for the hard landscaping  is being developed.


Constitution Street - Constitution Place to Tower Street 

This section has opened to traffic travelling in both directions from Baltic Street through to Ocean Drive at Rennie’s Isle/Victoria Bridge. There will be no parking, loading or stopping.

Tower Street update: Attenuation pipe works are continuing at Tower Street.  Carriageway reinstatement works have started, including the relaying of setts, and are scheduled to be completed in May 2022.

Access to Tower Street from Constitution Street remains closed with local access being maintained for residential private parking.  Parking restrictions also remain in place on Tower Street. Parking on the Shore has been reinstated up to the corner of the Shore/Tower Street.


 

OCEAN DRIVE TO NEWHAVEN

Stevedore Place

The traffic management arrangements have been adjusted and are expected to be in place until Summer 2022.  This will result in there being changes to vehicle and pedestrian routes.

Landscaping works have commenced on the north of Ocean Drive which has required localised traffic management on the carriageway.

Please note there will be further traffic management arrangements installed at Genting Casino from week commencing 25 April 2022. This will require the movement of the footways in the area.

Rennie’s Isle to Tower Place

Works are ongoing between Rennie’s Isle and Tower Place and the road remains closed. These works are scheduled to be completed by Autumn 2022. Vehicle access to Tower Place, Forth Ports, Stevedore Place, Constitution Place and Tower Street Industrial Estate will be via Commercial Street / Bernard Street, and onto Constitution Street. Vehicle access to the Cala Development and the entrance to Rennie’s Isle from the west is provided via Ocean Terminal on Ocean Drive.

Localised access to the Queens Quay Developments remains in place.  A pedestrian diversion will be in place via Tower Place and the Victoria Swing Bridge for pedestrians travelling east and west. Additionally, as part of this site establishment Tower Bridge will be closed to pedestrians to allow structural works to be undertaken.

UPDATE: Over the weekend of 9 / 10 April 2022 we will be making changes to the traffic management arrangements on Tower Place to accommodate main infrastructure works in the area and improve pedestrian movements.

Rennie’s Isle to Ocean Terminal

Victoria Bridge remains open to pedestrians. Vehicle access to the Cala Development and the entrance to Rennie’s Isle from the west is provided via Ocean Terminal on Ocean Drive.

Melrose Drive

Construction works are ongoing on the south roundabout on Ocean Drive to Melrose Drive. Pedestrian access is maintained, although may change at times throughout the phasing of works. Bus stops currently situated on Melrose Drive will be relocated to the west of Ocean Terminal.  


Lindsay Road

Two-way traffic was reinstated on Lindsay Road on 21 April. Please note the eastbound running lane from Sandpiper Road on to Melrose Drive heading east to the junction at North Leith Sands will close to traffic.
Pedestrian routes are expected to change with further information available in due course.

FOOTWAY WORKS 

Picardy Place – Playhouse pedestrian crossing update

The pedestrian crossing point near Edinburgh Playhouse has been relocated 30 metres north bound from Saturday 30 April 22.


 Elm Row

Hard Landscaping works are progressing well on Elm Row. Further footway works have commenced on Elm Row with affected properties directly notified. Access to properties will be maintained.  


Leith Walk – east side at 165a Leith Walk

From Wednesday 13 April 2022 site lines will be extended towards properties to accommodate Scottish Power connections to the newly built substation. Works are expected to take approximately 3 weeks.  Pedestrian access will be maintained. 


Constitution Street at Laurie Street - update  

From week commencing 25 April the walkway on the east will be closed, with main pedestrian access being maintained on the west side. Access to properties and businesses on the west side will be maintained. These arrangements will remain in place for approximately six weeks.

Laurie Street to Coatfield Lane: hard landscaping works

Following the traffic management flip to the east side of Constitution Street, hard landscaping, OLE and South Leith Parish Church wall works will commence


Coatfield Lane to Queen Charlotte Street

 From Thursday 28 April 2022 pedestrian access changed on the west side of Constitution Street from Coatfield Lane travelling north to accommodate main infrastructure works. Access to properties will be maintained. These works are expected to take approximately six weeks to complete.

Queen Charlotte Street to Baltic Street

The fence lines between Maritime / Mitchell Street and south of the Bernard / Baltic junction on Constitution Street were removed. Localised works for the installation of tram infrastructure are continuing.


Tower Street – Genting Casino

 We are currently reviewing the fence lines on the corner of the Tower Street junction and reduced fencing where possible.  

Additionally, there will be further traffic management arrangements installed at Genting Casino from week commencing 25 April 2022. These will require the movement of the footways in the area. 


Lindsay Road / Melrose Drive Residential Development between works sites

Localised works are continuing on the footways at the development between Lindsay Road and Melrose Drive. On completion, the Newhaven tram stop works will commence.  Access to properties will be maintained at all times. In addition, the construction of the tram welfare building has started.
