Notification of fence line extension at Balfour Street
More information about the hard landscaping works at Balfour Street
As part of the Trams to Newhaven Project, reinstatement works are continuing in the surrounding area on the west side of Leith Walk.
We are now required to extend our site lines westbound at the bell mouth of Balfour Street. This is expected to take place week commencing Monday 15 November and is estimated to take approximately four weeks.
These changes are to accommodate hard landscaping works in the area, which include the removal of several trees, with all necessary checks being undertaken.
The hard landscaping works will include kerbing, paving, installation of road surfacing as well as the installation of street furniture foundations. Paving works will tie into existing footways with new sections of cycleway also being installed.
As part of the indicative landscape designs and as indicated above, three trees are required to be removed on the north side of Balfour Street. The two trees closest to Leith Walk will be removed during these works with the removal of the third tree at a later stage of these works.
Waste management will remain in place in its current location.
Pedestrian footways and access to shops, hospitality and leisure units on the west side will always be maintained. However, footways widths will be reduced. In some situations, these might need to be reduced further, but access will be maintained for members of the public, residents, and local shop owners.
Businesses that are currently occupying the footway will have to remove any arrangements in place to accommodate the works. This includes permit holders for hospitality venues removing all table and chairs while these works are being carried out. Businesses will be visited by project representatives ahead of these changes and any concerns will be further discussed.
