Why we stop bin collections during bad weather
We always try our best to empty your bins, but sometimes bad weather can affect our collections for several reasons:
- An increase in parked cars on streets during bad weather can stop the bin lorries getting into or out of streets safely.
- There could be more recycling and waste for us to collect because we have not been able to collect bins due to bad weather conditions. This can cause collection delays as we try to catch up on any missed bin collections. Our priority is to get your collection service back to normal as quickly as possible.
- We need to make sure it is safe for our collection crew to collect your bins.
- Our bin lorries are large and extremely heavy. Driving one on an icy road could be risky for pedestrians, other vehicles and our crew.
- In severe fog it can be dangerous for us to operate bin lorries because visibility is reduced. This can be unsafe for our crews to empty bins if the driver cannot see where they are.
My road is clear, why haven’t you collected my bin?
Although road conditions where you live may be clear, they may still be unsafe in other locations. We need to consider how safe the whole collection route is when deciding on whether to pause or cancel bin collections.
How you can help during severe weather
There are a few things you can do to help us collect your bin during severe weather conditions
- Please park your car in a way that won’t cause access problems for our bin lorries. For example, avoid parking on both sides of the road if you live on a narrow street and if you have a driveway or garage please use it.
- If there has been snow fall, you could organise some snow shovelling along your road. This would help us get access to your bins to empty them. Find hints and tips for clearing snow and ice.
